Severe lack of updates...

Sorry guys! A few nights ago I decided to make a new burger pattie recipe I had found. Mushroom and Lentil. Well, it was gross. Looked fine, but gross all the same.

The other day in the early afternoon I decided to bake some scones. Admittedly they were out of a packet but the dough still had to be kneaded and the scones cut (with 2 4 year olds arguing over who got to cut which scone). Anyway, all was fine, I popped them in my preheated oven, set the time and walked away. I came back earlier than I was supposed to, to check on them, got near the oven and I could smell burning. I ended up removing blackened hockey pucks from the oven and then proceeded to drop them all over the kitchen floor. So I spent the next 15 minutes crawling underneath cabinets and fridges and hurling said hockey pucks across the room and into the bin. Turns out one of the aforementioned 4 year olds had thought it a good idea to turn the oven temperature up as high as it goes!

Then I had decided to make these mini baked ricotta tarts for dinner to have with some salad. They looked really yummy on the blog I found them on (non veg one) so I whipped them up. I was a little dubious however at the egg in them seeing as other than in some occasional egg pasta I don't really eat egg anymore. But I put it in anyway and baked away. They rose up in all manner of weird shapes and sizes so I kept patting them down to keep them looking right. Finally, 15 minutes beyond the quoted cooking time they emerged from my oven looking nothing like they should have! Oh well, food doesn't have to be pretty right? It just has to taste good? Wrong, WAY too long since I've eaten egg and egg was all I could taste! They kind of tasted like mini quiche but not nice like quiche can taste, just eggy, blech! So I fed them to my guinea pigs (read kids) who didn't like them either so they went in the bin too.

Not having learned my lesson yet I whipped up a batch of cashew nut ice cream. The concept is good but I think you need a way powerful blender or you need to "cook" the mix first or something because we have this odd, grainy sort of chocolate ice cream. So no point sharing that one with you all! I plan to fiddle with the recipe a bit because I liked the fact that it used agave nectar instead of sugar (however it was rather an expensive experiment to muck up!)

Then I finally did my head in by making some of Isa's Lemon Poppyseed Muffins from VwaV. I LOVE lemon poppyseed but I wasn't sure what to use as the soy yoghurt. So I subbed dairy. And subbed most of the oil for applesauce. What came out of my oven had peaks the size of Mount Everest and were pretty durn dense. Edible, but nothing to write home about.

By this stage it was 7:10pm and dinner was going to be a Naan Bread and a tin of Eden Organics Lentils in Tomato Sauce with Bay Seasoning (or something like that). As I picked up the tin to crack it open, what should I see on the label but "whole soy beans" in one of the sauces used. ARRGGGHHHH! Last minute panic as I trawl the interweb looking desperately for a quick and easy lentil recipe. I finally found this one which I scaled down to 1/4 to feed just me and had a late dinner at close on 8pm (and yes, terrible indigestion followed for the remainder of the night, people with reflux should NOT eat and then head to bed in exhaustion!!!) But it WAS yummy and if you get a chance and need a quick and easy meal this fits the bill. I promise I'll have a proper update for you all tonight! Something that will hopefully be yummy (but again untried and untested so could be tinned lentils again yet).
Oh and last nights dinner was actually good! Vegan Planet Linguine with Oyster Mushrooms and Gremolata (decided to play it safe and Vegan Planet usually is!):
Boy, when I had promised I would also publish kitchen disasters I had no idea I would deliver so many of them to you all!

5 Remarkable Remarks:

oh Amy! so sorry you're having a rough kitchen time right now. we all go through it sometimes, but it doesn't mean it's not sucky.

Oh wow, so sorry to hear that you had so many recipe failures!

Hi Princess :) I've been lurking here for about a week or so, from the vegsoc site, and I've been very inspired by some of your recipes! I havent tried any yet, but I'm certainly going to. I've been seriously considering doing a blog very similar to yours (especially seeing as I've only been veg for 3 weeks today! yay me!).
Anyhoo, I was wondering what was wrong with the mushroom patties? The concept seems fine, but sometimes it just doesnt work out fine! lol

You cook some wonderful stuff. I look forward to trying some of it out!

Anardana, tee hee, I've had a couple more since I posted yesterday! I must be on a roll.

Celeste, Hi! Trying to picture who you are over there, you'll have to make yourself known to me on the boards :P

The mushroom patties sounded lovely, the taste was just one of those tastes that made me feel kind of sick, blech. Not sure why exactly.

You should do a blog! (Although I warn you, you give yourself a lot of pressure to update it-lol).

Congrats on being veg for 3 weeks! It's so exciting at the start. I've kind of forgotten when I went veg, so no vege-versary's for me :P!
